Richard Grijalva is a Doctoral Candidate in the Department of Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.  He is currently working on his dissertation, entitled "The Idea of Mexico in the Long Colonial Twilight: Forging a Concept from the Bourbon Reforms to the First Federal Republic, 1754-1824", which maps the history of Mexico as a concept and name.  His research has been made possible in part by grants from UC MEXUS, the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States, the Department of Rhetoric at UC Berkeley, and UC Berkeley's Graduate Division.
